Melbourne, Florida, March 6-12, 2016 Part 1 - Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands in Viera
Glossy Ibis on the left, with an American Coot on the right
Great Egret in breeding plumage
(Note the green around the eye and between the eye and the bill.
It only gets that coloration for about 3 to 4 weeks during its mating season.)
White Ibis, also in breeding plumage
(Note the bright red bill with the black tip and bright red legs.
During the rest of the year the red is not nearly as bright, and the bill is all red, not black tip.)
Male Anhinga, not in breeding plumage
(male because of the black neck and head; the female has a brown neck and head;
not in breeding plumage because when breeding both male and female get a bright turquoise ring around the eye)
Adult Double-crested Cormorant
Common Gallinule
Snowy Egret
(not in breeding plumage, because the base of the bill
is the year-round color of yellow;
it gets red when ready for mating)
Great Blue Heron, in breeding plumage
(because of the blue in front of the eye,
which only occurs for about three or four weeks when the birds are ready to breed)
Great Blue Heron taking to flight, carrying nesting material; in breeding plumage
